George Albert Moore, CBE, KStJ was born in the market town of
Knaresborough, North Yorkshire where he grew up and attended the local Secondary Modern School. After leaving school he put to use the carpentry skills which he had learned and subsequently built up his highly successful business, Moores Furniture Group - employing hundreds of people at his factories at Thorp Arch Trading Estate, near Wetherby.
In 1970 Mr. Moore formed a welfare fund, initially to help those members of staff who were in need and also supporting workers in their own fundraising activities.
The Welfare Fund was greatly enhanced in 1987 when Mr. Moore sold his business, and over the years, The George A. Moore Foundation has become a well respected grant making Foundation.
In the past the Foundation supported many national causes, but now mainly concentrates on charities working within Yorkshire and the Isle of Man where Mr. & Mrs. Moore now live.
Mr. Moore’s philosophy of life can easily be summed up by his
heraldic motto:
“Perseverantia Omnia Dura Vincit”
(Perseverance overcomes all difficulties)
